Hitchhikers Wasp CP6 Backpack: Review

Hitchhikers SG is a very interesting brand and store from Singapore that likes to be at the pinnacle of carry goods and packs. Started by a group of people from different backgrounds, they all realized that a good pack should not be an afterthought, but rather a carefully thought out piece of equipment. Through their pursuit of the perfect pack, Hitchhikers has even started their own line of packs that feature well thought out capacities and construction.

For the Wasp CP6, Hitchhikers sought out to build a sleek, but robust and useful pack for city and tech use. This pack is an update to the original Wasp which was Hitchhiker’s initial foray into making their own packs. This update was also done in collaboration with artist Marc Lee, the man behind the amazing artwork of Coffee and Perspective, hence the moniker CP6. As a lover of sleek and tech friendly day packs, I was excited to see how the Wasp CP6 would do for my needs going around my concrete jungle.

Quality and Comfort

The quality of the Wasp CP6 overall is absolutely amazing. The material of choice is Challenge’s Ecopak EPX400 Sailcloth. Now this material is very cool because as a sailcloth laminate, it provides abrasion and weather resistance thanks to its DWR coating, 400d polyester face, diamond grid for tear resistance, and ripstop backing. The interior of the bag uses a bright orange liner for contrast.

The hardware used in the bag is also a great point. The bag is sealed with YKK Reverse Coil zippers that help keep the elements out. The zipper pulls are made from orange 550 paracord and a beautifully contrasting gray shrink tubing. One of my favorite details are the aluminum triglides used to adjust the strap length since they have a wolf gray anodizing that matches the Ecopack just about perfectly and has the Hitchhikers logo laser engraved.

The Wasp CP6 is also a very comfortable pack, due to the contoured straps and the thick mesh padding. The straps are contoured rather than straight which allows the pack to fit a wider range of bodies but also to help the user move freely without the straps digging in or getting in the way of being active like riding a bike, opening doors, etc. while distributing the weight. The straps and the back panel use a thick mesh padding that helps carry heavier or denser loads while helping suppress sweat. In fact, the back panel also uses two strips of this foam that helps create an air channel in between both strips. I do wish the pack came with the sternum strap.

Organization & Access

There is a lot of great organization with the Wasp CP6 in both macro and micro sizes. Since this is a tech focused pack, we’ll start with the laptop and document compartment that Hitchhikers calls the business pocket . Here there will be two flat sleeves with false bottoms which are great for some papers, folders, or thin notebooks; laptops and tablets will fit but mainly in the front sleeve and is best for under 14” laptops as my MacBook Air M2 was a bit of a squeeze and my Razer Blade 14 did not fit. The good thing is that if one has thicker devices or books, the compartment still features a padded bottom to protect any devices. While at first I was put off by the more ample size of this compartment, I realized that the term “business compartment” made more sense, since I had a division on my school days for my laptop and some textbooks, and the rest of my stuff. As someone who started playing Cyberpunk Red, I could also have my rulebook and sheets along with my laptop in one compartment, and daily carry in the other, which made me appreciate the division very much. Lastly, there are two open top mesh pockets in this area which could work for some notebooks, MacBook chargers, pens, SSDs, etc.

The main compartment features a full clamshell opening which makes it easy to access anything. Another great feature of the main compartment is the large vertical velcro strip used to secure packing inserts or admin organizers. On the other side of the main compartment there is a series of horizontal pockets; two made from transparent mesh and one from the same liner material. The mesh pockets give great options to stash smaller items like cables, stationary, EDC tools, or small hygiene items. The one made from the liner is a slightly taller pouch that would be best for small/medium items like a first aid kit. One thing to note however is that these pockets may not be the best at holding existing pouches and kit there, but hold most of the items that would be stashed in pouches like tools, battery banks, cables, etc.

The outside of the pack also features some pockets. On the front there are two pockets, one at the top as a stash pouch for pocket dumps, and one at the bottom for packable jackets.

On the back panel there is a small zipper pocket that goes along the horizontal length of the back panel which could serve well for stashing cash, travel documents, and an AirTag.

What’s Perfect

  • The pack is very sleek and modern looking along with premium materials for maximum durability and lifespan
  • The size along with the provided organization makes it friendly for many people who have to have a laptop and document centered carry along with other items, making it a really versatile and adaptive carry system
  • The contoured straps and liberal use of padding helps keep the pack comfortable all day for prolonged periods of time which is great for travel, students, and public transportation commuters.

What’s Not

  • Some of the provided micro organization is oddly sized which didn’t work too well with some of my pouches, so pouch people may have to find other solutions, but could work great for those that don’t already have a very specific pouch setup, or prefer not to switch bags often.
  • The pack is available only in 50 pieces and in a single gray color way. While I personally love Wolf Gray, some may put off by the exclusivity and lack of colors.

Wrap Up

The Hitchhikers Wasp CP6 is a very well thought out, well built urban pack. The material use and construction along with the organization makes it an ideal urban pack. In particular, the business pocket was very helpful for carrying a laptop along with other books or documents and was flexible enough to be used for office and school use. The use of the EcoPak inspires hope that any and all items will be more than sufficiently protected from the elements and any other possible damages, while also done in a sustainable way.
